Submitted by Heisenberg……Motivated by faith, Tracy Reid is using her professional experience to mold the next generation of young athletes to be the best they can be!
Before Diana Taurasi and Chamique Holdsclaw took to the floor of a WNBA court, Tracy Reid was helping to pave the way for the greats of today. Starting out playing for Miami Central High School, she was awarded three time Florida player of the year by the Miami Herald. With exceptional play on the court, it wasn’t long before the University of North Carolina came calling to add her to their team. While playing there she created a storied history. Finishing her college career as an Associated Press First-Team All American, she was also a member of three ACC Championship teams. To this day she ranks second in career points and third in rebounds in school history.
In 1998 she was drafted seventh overall by the Charlotte Sting in the first round of the WNBA draft. During that breakout rookie season, she averaged 13.8 points and 5.2 rebounds per game, showing that this newcomer was here to stay. Tracy went on to experience a successful pro career from 1998-2003 in the WNBA for Charlotte, Miami and Phoenix as well as stops in overseas professional leagues. Being one of the faces of the league even earned her a role in the 2002 Hollywood movie “Juwanna Man”!
Now retired from the WNBA, mentoring today’s youth and building a foundation for them to succeed are the cornerstones of what Reid is teaching today. Says Coach Reid, “Success is never easy, if you’re determined to work hard and never give up you can achieve all of your dreams.” When asked why she’s decided to give back to the next generation, “I felt that God blessed me with this gift, and that it was my duty to keep my gift going by giving back to this generation. I’ve realized without the help of someone else, I would have NEVER been able to achieve what I myself wanted to achieve. Everyone needs at least one helping hand, to mold and guide them into the best person they can be. That’s all I want to do, is help the next generation be the best that they can be.”
